The Gowanus Canal was designated a Superfund site by the United States Environmental Protection Agency in 2010. Cleanup efforts are underway, including dredging contaminated sediment and capping the canal bed. To support long-term remediation, the NYC Department of Environmental Protection is constructing two combined sewer overflow (CSO) tanks that will collect and store up to 12 million gallons of sewage and stormwater during rain events, preventing it from entering the canal.

Johnson & Asberry serves as the Community Liaison for the northern CSO facility in Red Hook. We lead community outreach and stakeholder engagement by maintaining a stakeholder database, coordinating notifications, and responding to concerns from local residents and small businesses. Our liaison plays a central role in keeping the public informed, managing construction-related impacts, and ensuring the project progresses with transparency and accountability.

Through consistent communication and proactive problem-solving, we help maintain a positive relationship between the project team and the surrounding community, supporting on-time, on-budget, and safe project delivery.
